Who is Gordon Ramsay?

Gordon James Ramsay, OBE, is a British chef, restaurateur, writer, and member of the television industry. Since its founding in 1997, his restaurant chain, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, has received 17 Michelin stars in total; it now has seven.

In Renfrewshire, Scotland, on November 8, 1966, Gordon James Ramsay Jr. was born. He is Gordon and Helen Cosgrove’s son. From the age of five, Ramsay Jr. was raised in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.

His father, a “hard-drinking womanizer,” neglected and mistreated him during his early years. He played football, and at the age of 12 he was initially selected to play under-14 football.

Gordon Ramsay career

At the age of 19, Ramsay Jr. became committed to pursuing a culinary education. He worked at the Wickham Arms and the Wroxton House Hotel in the early 1980s. He relocated to London and worked in numerous restaurants there.

Ramsay decided to learn French cuisine while working for the erratic Marco Pierre White at Harvey’s for over three years. He started working for Albert Roux at Le Gavroche in Mayfair on the advice of White.

He stayed in France for a further three years and profited from Guy Savoy’s guidance. Then he agreed to take a less demanding position as a personal chef on the luxury yacht Idlewild, which is based in Bermuda.

Ramsay received an opportunity to become the head chef and receive a 10% share in the Rossmore when he returned to London in 1993.

In the following 15 years, Gordon Ramsay went on to build a prosperous restaurant chain not only in England but also in Glasgow, Ireland, Dubai, Tokyo, New York City, Florida, and Los Angeles.

He made an appearance on the TV show Faking It in 2001, assisting Ed Devlin, a hamburger flipper who wanted to become a chef, in learning the ropes. The BAFTA for Best Factual TV Moment was awarded to this episode.

In 2010, he served as a producer and judge for the US edition of MasterChef, participated in Gordon’s Great Escape, a travel documentary about his trip to India, and served as the host of Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.

He wrote 21 books and contributed to The Times Saturday magazine up until 2012. His two works, Roasting in Hell’s Kitchen and Humble Pie, are memoirs.

In 1996, Ramsay married Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson, a teacher with a background in Montessori. They have five children: Megan, Holly, Jack, Tilly, and Oscar, and they split their time between Los Angeles and the London neighbourhood of Wandsworth Common.
