Michael Sams is an English kidnapper, extortionist and murderer. He kidnapped Julie Dart in July 1991 and later murdered her following her attempted escape.

Born and reared in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire, Michael Sams. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the Merchant Navy. After three years, he moved back to Keighley where he worked as an elevator engineer before obtaining his central heating engineer license and starting his own business.
Sams, however, turned to crime and was initially incarcerated in 1976 for vehicle theft and filing a false insurance claim. Sams received a cancer diagnosis while he was incarcerated, which resulted in the amputation of one of his legs.
After being freed, Sams was compelled to sell his failing company and accept a position with Black & Decker. In the 1980s, he subsequently launched a new company that sold power tools.
