Career of Vani Jayaram
When famous Hindi cinema music director Vasant Desai selected her voice for the Hindi feature film Guddi in 1971, she achieved her childhood dream of becoming a film playback singer. Bol Re Papi Hara, a song based on the Hindustani raga Miyan Malhar that rapidly earned her a household name in India, was one of the three songs she recorded for Guddi.
She received the Tansen Samman, Best Promising Singer honor from Lions International, All India Cinegoers Association, and All India Filmgoers Association honors for that song in 1971.
Vani went on to perform a few songs for each of the Hindi film music composers: Chitragupt, Naushad, Madan Mohan, O.P. Nayyar (a few songs from the movie Khoon Ka Badla Khoon, including duets with Mohammed Rafi as well as with Uttara Kelkar and Pushpa Pagdhare), R.D. Burman (a duet with Mukesh in the movie Chhalia), Kalyanji Anand She won the Filmfare Award for her songs in the 1979 Pandit Ravi Shankar film Meera, which starred M.S. Subbulakshmi.
In 1973, Vani recorded her first Tamil song for S.M. Subbaiah Naidu’s film Thaiyum Seiyum.
